The following picture comes from Google's blog. It shows where the eyes of visitors are looking on the Google search results page.
(The dark red spots are the ones where the eyes stayed the longest.)
We can see that the first two results are very much read, but the other ones are scanned rapidly by the eyes.
Do you think your website will get a lot of visitors if it is at the 45th rank , on the fifth page of search results ?
For example, let's compare a local business that sells doors and windows. Vitrerie Oligny, who advertised in my local newspaper and one of its competitors Verdun Portes et Fenêtres who advertised on the local radio.
It's interesting to note that Verdun Portes et Fenêtres is ranking higher on most search engines for a lot of keywords, including "portes fenetres rive sud". The 188th rank for Vitrerie Oligny for the keyword "portes fenetres rive sud" places it on the 19th page on Google.ca. It would be surprising that a client would search that far.
The only hope for Vitrerie Oligny to be found is that someone would search for "vitrerie rive sud", for which keywords it ranks at the 5th rank on Google.ca.
For both of these companies, their websites could be optimized to be found a lot better on the search engines for most of the keywords that are important for their business.
